She sat through that dance and the next. Probably if she had gone on to the dance floor she would have found herself a partner, but she was shy of doing this—besides, Adam might come to look for her. She had a splendid view of the dancers although she wasn’t easily seen herself, only by Duert ter Brandt who kept her under his eye without appearing to do so.

Christina was getting a little impatient and was on the point of making up her mind to leave her alcove when she was surprised to see Truus creeping along the wall towards her. She got up and went to meet her, putting an arm round her and sitting her down in the chair she had just left.

“Truus, you’re ill,” she said urgently. “What is it?”

“A pain—here.” Truus put a cautious hand on her stomach.

“And I feel so strange—I think I want to be sick.”

Christina looked round her. The dance floor was packed and no one was looking in their direction, nor was there anyone she knew in sight.

There was a door behind her, if she could get Truus through it and back into the hospital itself. . She turned back to her friend and was alarmed to see that her white face had taken a greenish tinge.

“Truus—’ she began, and was gently interrupted by the doctor’s deep voice.

“Something’s wrong?” He bent over Truus for a moment.
